What percent of a father’s income goes to child support?

January 10, 2024 in Child and Spousal Support (Alimony)

Child support calculations in Florida are based on the combined net income of both parents and follow specific guidelines. For parents with a combined net income between $800 and $10,000 per month, the guidelines provide a detailed schedule to determine child support amounts. If the obligor parent (the one required to pay child support) has a net income less than the amount specified in the guidelines, the child support payment is determined on a case-by-case basis. This approach establishes the principle of payment and lays the foundation for increased support orders should the parent’s income rise.

For low-income obligor parents, the child support payment is the lesser of two amounts: the parent’s actual dollar share of the total minimum child support amount or 90 percent of the difference between the parent’s monthly net income and the current poverty guidelines. This method ensures that the child support payment is fair and proportionate to the parent’s ability to pay, considering their financial circumstances. The emphasis is on establishing a payment principle while also considering the parent’s financial capacity.
